Clean filtered air at a chosen pressure enters an atomizer which contains a known volume of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. A concentrated solution of polystyrene latex beads (PSL) of known aerodynamic diameter is added to the water and alcohol solution. The atomized aerosol passes through a steel tube containing a radioactive Krypton-85 source, thereby neutralizing any electric charge on the PSL aerosol. The aerosol then flows into a chamber of a known volume and is mixed with filtered dry air. The cyclone is fitted to the bottom of the mixing chamber and air containing the test aerosol is pulled through the cyclone. The particle counter operates at a constant flowrate (Q2) through the flow meter (Q1) making a net flow through the test cyclone. Air is drawn alternately through the cyclone and directly from the mixing chamber. Particle concentrations are recorded eight times upstream and downstream of the test cyclone, resulting in an average concentration.
